Comando Praetorio Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Few individuals gathered under the rise of autumn equinox 2012 to form Comando Praetorio.
Each of us comes  from other bands, but we don’t consider CP as a side project, but an autonomous and self-conscious entity spawned to bring forth our inner visions, and explain our detachment against the ruins of human kind.

2.In January you had released an ep, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

As said before, Comando Praetorio has to do with the most nihilistic and spiritual side  of ourselves, it is an unmediated expression of our most abysmal feelings: in order to explain this, according with our background, it was natural to compose traditional, inspired black metal hymns evoking apocalyptic and tragic feelings, with an impetuous riffing alternating with a more atmospheric and intimistic vein.

3.The lyrics cover Spiritual Discipline and Philosophy, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

In these three songs we deal, for what concern “Samsara” and “Divinità Terrifiche – In virtù del vuoto” with the path to “moksa”, cutting off ourselves from human limits and borders, through the discipline of the tantric vamamarga, not in a mere childish way as sometimes occur in the black metal milieu, but in a more actual and intimate meaning. “Figli dell’era del lupo” is a more existential vision of our lives in the age of decay and spiritual de activation. The lyrics of “Samsare” are written by our friend Vira Saturnio, poet and spiritual scholar.

4.What is the  meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Comando Praetorio'?

We think that is the correct label for an entity forged to dominate and exterminate the spiritual weakness, the typical cowardice of herd of subhumans populating the earth.
First of all there is no pity, no mercy towards ourselves, towards our weakness and so this entity is the command of an heretical war against mediocrity, to annihilate the so called human vision of life in our deep inner self.

5.Has the band done any live shows or has this been strictly a studio project so far?

CP has never played live yet; at the moment we are overhaul details for our future live apparitions, especially regarding scenography; we claim a particular and personal approach able to emphasize our concept.

6.The ep was released through 'War Command Distro', can you tell us a little bit more about how you came in contact with this label?

I know the manager of Label Francesco since 1999 when I established the first contacts among Italian black metal scene. I think that Francesco is not only a good expert of extreme metal in Italy but also a reliable person and a very committed spiritual and metapolitical soldier so it was absolutely coherent to deal with him for what concern the issue of “Divinità terrifiche”.

7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

CP has got some good feedback so far from individuals and zines; despite it was released only some weeks ago, therefore  we are satisfied for  the responses obtained.

8.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part off?

Some of us are involved in the entity known as Movimento d’Avanguardia Ermetico and we are working on the issue of a new album, “Torri del silenzio”. The vocalist of Comando Praetorio is A.M. a singer with a great experience and career with Bastard Saints death metal band. Also our bass player FAK is involved in Amethista from Turin.

9.When can we expect a full length album and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Actually, we are already thinking for the new material for the future album, but nothing is planned at the moment; for sure we will continue along on the path signed with ‘Divinità Terrifiche’, but for every future step, both for musical and spiritual expression, is basic for us to continue in the way of increasing intolerance looking for higher standards.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I think that eastern black metal scene such as Ukrainian and Russian bands are one of the influences. I have in mind great act such as Hate Forest and Drudkh from Ukraina, or Branikald, Forest and Vargleide from Russia. I think also that band like Clandestine Blaze or Katharsis could be a good  example of our main inspiration, along with Abyssic Hate, Kristallnacht and the first way of Deathspell Omega.

11.Does Occultism play any role in your music?

I think that the correct term should be “sadhana”, the warrior like way of the spiritual discipline through extreme activations and shock, so definitely spirituality plays a role in our music.
If we consider that, in such way, spiritual quest and ultimate stand beyond good and evil and that certain “truth” should be understood only by an estatic vision and experience you could reach the deep meaning of our music, that tries to break the limitation of the ego.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

“The blood of the heroes is closer to God than the ink of the philosophers and the prayers of the faithful.”
